"I used to think as long as we were together, Patty and I would always be able to laugh.... that we could have a fun and crazy life, just the two of us... I never thought we needed anyone. I use to hate everyone else... I use to wish we could make them all disappear forever... Patty laughed so hard that day... it was like she was making up for all the years before. Looking back..... I think maybe the Shinigami did take our lives after all... in a sense..."

— Elizabeth as she thinks of Death the Kid's impact on her life in "Salvage (Part 7)".

Elizabeth Thompson (エリザベス・トンプソン, Erizabesu Tonpuson) is a demon weapon and the older sister of Patricia Thompson.[1] Formerly a thuggish ruffian alongside her sister raised in the streets of New York, both her own and sister's life turn for the better when they encountered their future meister, Death the Kid.[2][3]

Eventually becoming Kid's weapon partner alongside her sister, she became a student of Death Weapon Meister Academy enrolled in the E.A.T Class.[4] After the fall of Arachnophobia, she was later recognized as a two-star weapon and was a member of Spartoi until the battle on the Moon against the Clown Army.[citation needed]

Liz is one of the protagonists in Soul Eater and a supporting character in it's prequel, Soul Eater Not!.

Personality

While Patty is very child-like, Liz is very moody and more like a stereotypical teenage girl (worried about makeup, shopping, looks, etc).[5] Despite mostly being the cool-headed and serious of the sisters, she is shown to be extremely afraid of paranormal things, convinced that any ghost she meets is out to eat her (where her paranoia severely irritates the ghosts that are trying to help her). She can also be a little cynical, jaded, and shallow sometimes (but not always), and sometimes takes advantage of other people for her own gains, like when she pretends that Tsubaki's cooking is her own to impress a boy she likes. She can be flirtatious and can also be charming to men, mostly in order to deceive them (which is shown when she tricks Giriko alongside Patty).

Both Liz and Patty admire Kid's dignified soul due to the fact that they are from the streets.[6] Unlike Patty, Liz finds the drama brought on by Kid's perfectionist attitude annoying. Also, Patty adores her and thinks that Liz knows everything.

It is shown, both in the main series and Soul Eater Not!, that before she and Patty became Kid's Weapons, they were much more cruel and selfish. In one of Liz's flashbacks, she and Patty were mugging an old man, saying that they wouldn't hurt him if he gave them his money. After Liz snatches his briefcase, she hits him over the head with Patty (in Weapon form).

She is the older and more mature of the two sisters. Kid's obsession with symmetry and how he will let it control his life sometimes gets on her nerves and she frequently reprimands Kid for this, although she won't hesitate to cheer him up when he is depressed. She also displays wit, courage and determination whenever her friends are in danger, and tries her best to protect them.

Appearance

Liz has dirty blonde hair that reaches her mid-back, dark blue eyes, and slightly sun-kissed skin. Although taller and older than Patty, she has a smaller breast size, which annoys her when noticed by Kid, along with his groping of her breasts.[7] Upon her arrival in Death City, she is 170 centimeters tall (about 5 feet 7 inches).[8]

During their initial missions with Kid, both Liz and Patty wear cowgirl outfits: tight, sleeveless red turtleneck belly shirts with white ties, cowboy hats and black high-heel boots. However, unlike Patty, Liz wears dark wash jeans and two silver bracelets on each wrist. In addition, there is a subtle difference in their hats. Patty's hat has rounded rims, whilst Liz's hat has rims that slant forward. In the anime, as the series progress, both Thompson sisters wear cropped white jackets over their outfits. Liz's soul has a pink color and has two curved triangles representing her hat.

When "studying" for the Super-Written Exam (she mostly procrastinated through all of it), she changes into a purple business outfit with a headband brushing back her hair, two heeled shoes and a pair of reading glasses. This is referred to as her "smart-girl transformation". Her glasses have not been seen again for the rest of the series, so whether she requires reading glasses or not has as of yet not been clarified. Saying this, they are referred to as 'fashion glasses' or 'glasses for looks' in the manga. However, she is shown to be intelligent enough to pass the Exam without studying as much as the others, scoring higher than Patty, Black☆Star and even Death the Kid, who admittedly, couldn't even write his name.

In the shower, Liz will use a clip to hold up her long hair behind her head.[9]

After the assassination of Joe Buttataki, Liz along with other DWMA members wore a black armband on her left bicep.[10]

After joining Spirit Albarn and Sid Barrett to confront Risa and Arisa with accusations that they are witches, Liz and Patty wear unbuttoned dress shirts with vertical creases along the front, along with her black armband. Whereas Liz wore a dark, lengthy business skirt, Patty wore dark shorts secured with a belt.[9]

During their infiltration of Baba Yaga Castle, Liz and Patty initially wore their usual attire at that time, the sweater tops with tall collars and ties, but with the addition of wearing a thick long sleeve jacket, with four buttons along the front.[11][12] With help from Eruka Frog, they donned Arachnophobia robes over their outfits, yet somehow were able to find and change into maid outfits, consisting of dark dresses, dark ribbon ties, shoes with ribbons, and light color maids' aprons and hats. They retained these outfits for the rest of their mission infiltrating Baba Yaga Castle, even when wearing Arachnophobia robes over these outfits.[13]

After the defeat of Arachnophobia but before the formation of Spartoi, Liz accompanied Maka and Patty to the Death City basketball court to discuss Noah's abduction of Kid. Liz, Patty, and Maka wore similar attire: a checkerboard skirt and a dress shirt. Liz's was unbuttoned and its tie loosened. Maka and Patty wore similar attire, only with the addition of a D-City sweater vest (looking similar to Meme Tatane's sweater vest). In addition, Liz had a skull-shaped necklace.[14]

In her Spartoi uniform, Liz wears a zip-up top over a blue vest and a white sports jacket over it. She no longer wears her cowboy hat, and her jeans are replaced by a blue pleated skirt.

Out of all the characters, Liz changes the most physically when entering the Book of Eibon. Her appearance is that of a heavily-built man with closely cropped hair and piercings on each ear, wearing a white jacket and dark pants. Despite her threatening appearance, she still displays her squeamishness and cowardice, much to Patty's amusement. Also, she along with Tsubaki remain in their opposite gender form the longest, revealing that they are the most lustful out of the group. However the most lustful of them is Tsubaki, as Liz turns back to normal slightly before Tsubaki.

Special Abilities

Full-Weapon Transformation (全身武器, Zenshin Buki): As a demon weapon, Liz is capable of transforming herself into her weapon form at will. Additionally, Liz has learned the ability to exploit her transformation powers to her advantage and surprise her opponents. Not only does it allow for surprise, but also quick movement between her and Patty. While doing so and as she transform, she is incapable of being hurt.[15]

Demon Twin Guns

Demon Twin Guns.

  • Demon Twin Guns (二丁魔拳銃, Ni-chō Makenjū): Liz has the power to transform herself into one of the two Demon Twin Guns, in which resembles a silver-themed Beretta M9 Pistol. With this transformation, she has a plethora of abilities for her Meister to utilize.[1]
  • Wavelength Control (波長コントロール, Hachō Kontorōru): As a demon weapon, Liz is capable of controlling her meister's wavelength.[1]
  • Wavelength Compression (波長圧縮, Hachō Asshuku):Of Liz's own admission, the Demon Twin Gun do not fire regular bullets and has the ability to compress the wavelength of their Meister and fire shots.[16]

Gun-Type Meister (銃型職人, Jū-gata Shokunin): Liz is particular skilled with the usage of a gun, namely her sister's twin gun transformation. She wield her sister due to the bond that comes from resonance between relatives.[1] While wielding her sister, she applies much of her dirty fighting tactics and exploits the advantages of using a gun as a weapon.[17]

  • Shooting Skills (銃撃技, Jūgeki Waza): A proficient gun user, Liz is a skilled marksman.[1]

Hand-to-Hand Combat (体術(たいじゆつ), Taijutsu): While neither in the league of Death the Kid nor her younger sister Patty, Liz is at least competent in fighting enough to clobber ordinary citizens of Death City.[18] Being raised in the streets, Liz is a staunch believer in the usage of dirty fighting, dismissing fair fighting notions. Because of this, she uses any natural advantages she can.[19]

History

Soul Eater Episode 15 - Liz remembers the Devils of Brooklyn

Liz and Patty on the streets of Brooklyn, known as the Brooklyn Devils.

Born from an unknown woman who was known to be the prettiest prostitute in New York, Liz and her younger sister, Patricia, were abandoned at an early age.[20] Both sisters learned of their transformation powers as Demon Weapons, using them to commit crimes in order to support themselves financially and to protect themselves from other criminals.[21] One of their other tactics, beyond using themselves as demon pistols to rob others, involved sleeping powder.[22] Their notoriety earned them the nickname the "Brooklyn Devils." Their crimes even garnered the attention of the DWMA, including one of their important members, Death the Kid.[23][24]

Episode 6 (NOT!) - Liz and Patty meet Death the Kid

Liz and Patty meet Death the Kid for the first time.

Upon encountering Kid, Liz, high on drugs, used Patty's demon pistol form in an attempt to blackmail and steal from him, to no avail and unaware he was a God of Death.[25] Yet Liz and Patty seemed to leave an imprint on Kid, as he learned the sisters could transform into symmetrical weapons.[26] When Liz and Patty were cornered by gang members, Kid saved the two, revealed he was a God of Death, and offered to take them as his weapon partners "to build a perfect world." Conspiring with Patty, Liz planned to steal Kid's status and wealth, largely to provide Patty with a more stable life off the streets. Kid took Liz and Patty to Death City, where they are placed into DWMA's custody and put on probation for their crimes.[26]

Synopsis

Soul Eater Not!

Traitors arc

Episode 6 (NOT!) - Liz and Patty pick on Anya

Liz and Patty take an opportunity to pick on Anya for not leaving a tip.

During Liz and Patty's probation at Deathbucks Café, they are still rather gruff, as they were when committing crimes in New York, rudely serving new NOT students Meme Tatane, Tsugumi Harudori, and Anya Hepburn. After finishing their shift, Liz and Patty loiter outside the cafe to pick on Anya, having identified her regal, wealthy background based on her dress and manners. Upset, Anya, wielding Tsugumi, challenges Liz and Patty to a duel. Liz accepts, as Patty transforms into her weapon form, a demon pistol, which frightens Tsugumi.[27]

Episode 6 (NOT!) - Patty holds a gun (Liz) to Anya's head.

Patty holding Liz to the back of Anya's head.

Using Patty, Liz intimidates both Anya and Tsugumi and Patty watches as Liz chastises them on the concept of being unfair in a street fight. When Liz offers a free shot and Anya takes it, both of them switch places with Patty holding a gun to the back of her head. Citing that they're not fighting on equal footing, Patty shoots and intentionally misses. With Liz explaining that they're not wanting to get into serious trouble while on probation, both sisters let the trio go.[28]

While Anya and Meme are initially too intimidated to return to Deathbucks, Tsugumi does, returning day after day because she enjoys Master's cafe too much, and she also admires Liz and Patty's strength as fellow demon weapons.[29]

Anime version

In the anime, events are played slightly different. The first time Tsugumi returns to Deathbucks, she sees customers leaving in disgust, frustrated at how rude are Patty and Liz. Tsugumi seats herself and, when approached by Liz, struggles to spit out her order. Frustrated, Liz simply writes an order for milk, leaving Patty to dump a mug of it onto the table.[18]

The second time, Liz is fed up with Tsugumi visiting despite her cold attitude towards her and refuses to serve her, feeling she's only coming to the cafe to mock them. Before Tsugumi can explain why she has arrived, their argument is interrupted by an irate customer who complains that Patty spilled water on his shoe. He demands that Patty clean his shoe, but Patty refuses, claiming his raggy face can clean it himself. The customer throws the rest of his water into Patty's face, motivating the younger Thompson to pull back her fist to punch the customer. But Patty is blocked by Liz—who herself prepares to clobber this customer. Tsugumi tries to interfere, only for her to get punched by Liz. When Tsugumi starts bleeding, Master orders Patty to grab a towel, with Patty doing so unconditionally.[18]}}

Episode 6 (NOT!) - Master explains what Death City is about to Patty and Liz

Master explaining to Liz and Patty about Death City's nature in accepting others.

Tsugumi discovers that Liz and Patty's poor service continues to drive away customers, although Master himself does not seemed worried.[30] As Liz complains how they are doing their best, she and Patty are approached by Tsugumi. As the Thompsons are confused why Tsugumi keeps returning to the cafe, Tsugumi explains that she is indeed afraid of the sisters, but she still admires their strength, considering them to be cool and beautiful, which impresses, even embarrasses, Liz and Patty. Supporting Tsugumi's point, new customers arrive who, despite knowing the Thompsons' poor service, are interested to see such attractive waitresses. Master then supports Tsugumi's point, reassuring Liz and Patty that they do not have to pretend to be nice or be tough because people in Death City are understanding, focused not on external appearances but on the soul itself. He then tells the sisters to get back to work.[31]

In the anime, events are, again, played slightly different. Patty and Liz approach Tsugumi's table, who is joined by Anya and Meme as well as Kim Diehl and Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupré. To apologize for her behavior, Liz offers to take their order. Tsugumi finally says with confidence her order—and yet receives from Patty and Liz another mug of milk instead.[18]

At Deathbucks, Tsugumi, Meme, and Anya are joined by Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupré and Kim Diehl for a group study session to prepare for their mid-term exam. Liz and Patty saved a seat for the students. While Liz and Patty still are brusch waiting on the students, the two at least take the students' orders. But neither one writes down the orders, still over-confident in themselves and ignoring what was said to them. Liz and Patty return with orders, Liz bragging that she has so much experience now working at Deathbucks that she can read people's faces for their orders. As Liz and Patty leave, Tsugumi and her friends trade orders: Liz got the correct orders, just to the wrong people (although Meme cannot remember her order).[32]

Soul Eater NOT Episode 7 HD - Liz and Patty confront NOT bullies

Liz and Patty confront disruptive customers

Later that day, Liz and Patty tend to another table where poorly behaving NOT students are disrupting Tsugumi's table. Liz and Patty threaten to beat the students. As those NOT students stand up, they see Master glare at them and quickly leave. Before Liz and Patty can turn around to see why the NOT students left without a fight, they see Master, who is now washing glasses, as if nothing happened.[32] That same day, Liz and Patty are then joined by Tsugumi, Meme, Anya, and Jacqueline as waitresses to help with the increased number of customers—but they took so long to change into outfits that the customer rush has already been served.[32]

In the anime, after Eternal Feather attacks the Death Bazaar, Tsugumi, Anya, and Meme spend some time at Deathbucks, where Patty tends to be lounging about or tending to customers while Liz talks to the trio.[33]

JOT Arc

Soul Eater NOT Chapter 24 - Liz laughs at Master

Liz laughs at Master's hair

Over the next few weeks, Liz and Patty keep working at Deathbucks, as boredom sets in with so few customers, especially before noon. While Patty makes a sculpture from napkins, Liz complains Master is too serious, struggling to hear jokes from him or mess with his hair. In the anime these events take place earlier, during Tsugumi's study group.[34]

Preparations! arc

When Halloween approaches, Patty, Liz, and Master get to work to decorate Deathbucks for the holiday.[35] Tsugumi and her meisters arrive at Deathbucks with a request: Eternal Feather gave them a poster to publicize the DWMA's upcoming Death Festival. While Anya teases Master's “cute little” moped, Patty, wearing a frightening ghost outfit, manages to scares not only Tsugumi but also Liz.[36]

Death Fest arc

The night before Halloween, the witch Shaula Gorgon possesses Meme and kills Sid Barrett. Akane☆Hoshi and Clay Sizemore separate Anya from Tsugumi, revealing Anya to actually be Princess Anastasia Yngling and demanding she be returned to her family at Yngling Castle.[37]

Soul Eater NOT Episode 11 HD - Liz drives Tsugumi

Liz clears a path for Tsugumi by firing Patty

The next day, on Halloween, the Death Festival begins. At Deathbucks, Liz and Patty hear the explosions from the festival and mistake it for the EAT students' battle, not realizing it is an attack by Shaula and her Traitors. They then see Tsugumi run to them, asking for their help. While Patty frowns at Tsugumi's long-winded explanation, Liz yells at the NOT student to get to the point. The trio then enter Deathbucks and demand Master hand over their scooter. Liz and Tsugumi get on the scooter, while Patty enters her pistol form, which Liz fires into the air to clear away traffic as they speed to the Death City Airport to stop Anya from leaving.[38]

Liz and Patty find Anya's car crashed, with her and the other riders safe. After Tsugumi and Anya reunite and decide to find Meme to rescue her from possession, Liz and Patty give up the scooter to let them drive to Shaula's location.[38] After Tsugumi and Anya depart, Liz and Patty return to Death City, whether on foot or by other transportation, where Liz, wielding Patty, assists in incapacitating Traitors,[39] before Tsugumi, Anya, and Meme defeat Shaula.[40]
