While a womanizer, Spirit loves his daughter and considers her the most important person in his life. Despite this, their relationship is complicated due to Spirit's affairs with Maka's mother, in which resulted in their relationship becoming conflicted. This has caused her to hate him.

Manga

Being her weapon partner, both Maka and Soul possess a close relationship despite their contrasting personality, in which one is hardworking and serious while another is rebellious and cynical. Their acceptance of one another is to a degree that they could manage soul resonance despite Franken Stein's speculation that the pair's wavelength were unstable and cannot achieve resonance. Their closeness at a point where the pair have danced with one another on more than one occasion , held hands together and brought their heads towards each other, and Maka flushed upon Soul's admittance of her's influence causing him to learn to stop running away from his problems, a flaw he recognized. Despite this, Soul has admitted on one occassion to her on that he doesn't feel actual romantic feelings towards her, with Maka having already understood this.

Though they remain close, Maka's relationship with Soul can have conflict at times; while she herself doesn't appreciate Soul's common insertion that she is unattractive on multiple occassions, his inconsiderate comments towards her being unattractive has caused her to be self-conscious at times and once prompted her to prove she had some appeal to him.

In a translation of a 2008 interview within the Soul Eater Super Guidebook: How to Make a Death Scythe, author Ōkubo responds to an inquiry regarding any potential future development between Stein and Marie:

“Hmm… I can’t see it. I don’t really have any plans to develop any of the main characters’ male-female relationships anywhere beyond ‘normal’ trust relationships, after all. I showed a glimpse of love between Marie and BJ, but that was more of a mature relationship…”

On the other hand, Ōkubo makes mention of incorporating romance through Ox and Kim in the same interview:

“The kiss for Ox was completely romantic! Although there are hardly romantic sections in the comic, I wanted to try it out with Ox and Kim.”

This is one example of an exception he made at that point in time.

Despite having no initial plans for more of this sort of progression, later chapters of the manga up to its conclusion in 2014 saw the eventual development of an off-screen romance between Stein and Marie that led to the conception of a child. The inclusion of this contradicts Ōkubo’s prior 2008 statement, leaving his intent uncertain and any other potential romances without canon confirmation up to interpretation.
