Soul Eater Not! (ソウルイーターノット!, Sōru Ītā Notto!; sometimes stylized as "Soul Eater NOT!") is a spin-off prequel of Soul Eater.
Focusing on Tsugumi Harudori's discovery as a demon weapon and placement within Death Weapon Meister Academy's Normally Overcome Target Class (or N.O.T Class for short), she befriends two first-year meisters, Meme Tatane and Anya Hepburn, and attends classes at the famed academy in hopes of controlling her powers and being able to live a normal life. Along the way, she comes across a sinister witch's plan to destroy Death Weapon Meister Academy and must choose between her two friends to permanently be her meister partner.
The manga comprises 42 chapters that were collected into five volumes. It was later adapted into anime consisting of 12 episodes.
Death Weapon Meister Academy (or "D.W.M.A" for short) is a training school for demon weapons, human beings that transform into weapons, and meisters, users of demon weapon's transformation forms. Split into two curriculum, the Normally Overcome Target Class (N.O.T Class for short) is the non-combatant portion of the larger majority of the school dedicated to training demon weapons to control their powers, teach meisters basic skills, and allow students to take advantage of the educational resources of the institution to further their individual careers. The Especially Advantaged Talent Class (E.A.T Class for short) is the portion of the school dedicated to fighting evil and upholding world order.
When Japanese schoolgirl Tsugumi Harudori learns of her demon weapon heritage and awakens her power, she attends the D.W.M.A and befriends two meisters, Anya Hepburn and Meme Tatane and both become her potential meister candidates. With help of Akane Hoshi and occassionaly encounters with characters from the previous series, Tsugumi and her friends learn the ropes of what it means to be students at the DWMA.
As she goes along through the semester and adjusts to the eccentric lifestyle in the D.W.M.A and Death City, she comes across her most difficult decision yet: she must choose between both her meister partners by the end of the Battle Festival, a tournament held on Halloween. Her life is even more complicated her and her friends uncover a sinister plot as a evil witch named Shaula Gorgon enacts her plans to destroy Death Weapon Meister Academy.
Atsushi Okubo has explained that, when he began Soul Eater, he already had the plot and details like the DWMA fully formed and shared with his editors. He thought too many manga had characters who were developed through flashbacks, which he considered too clever. Therefore, he decided to develop his characters in the present rather than referring to their pasts, and to focus on "action and momentum," so he could "write freely." But as he was about to publish his twentieth volume, Okubo realized he has been too late to thoroughly explain certain details, and he did not want to introduce extensive exposition as backstory or appendices in the manga. Therefore, he started Soul Eater Not! to introduce details about the settings of Death City and the Death Weapon Meister Academy, while still telling a story "through an alternative presentation that really moves in a different direction from the main Soul Eater series."
